Upper South News – June 2017

Kia ora everyone

As we creep closer to our coldest, wettest months, a friendly reminder to check smoke alarms, gutters for leaves and to clean the filters on your heat pumps for maximum efficiency.

Living in our region this winter also means to familiarise yourselves with the current highway changes. The new speed limits on the open roads have changed along with the ongoing road works. The new status for the Lewis Pass is different. It will either be open or closed, no chains are allowed over winter. This may mean having to plan ahead and be mindful when making important appointments that there may not be too many alternatives if the road is suddenly closed. Plan extra time for your long trips and take extra snacks and amusements for the kids.

KEY CONTACTS

Nelson and Tasman Association

There is an opportunity for a caregiver to join the Key Contact team. We have been incredibly supported in this role by Cat and Caroline who have given our families some amazing events and initiated the support networks that we currently have. However, due to changes of circumstances both are no longer able to continue with this role. I know that you all join me in thanking them wholeheartedly and it is reassuring to know that they are still members and will be around to enjoy future get-togethers with us. Contact myself or Rachel Cawkill for further details.

Please join our closed Facebook pages. I often post upcoming events and trainings, some useful and informative resources. This is only open to members of our region and Fostering Kids NZ National Staff who also feed in information from a national level. It also gives caregivers the ability to ask and offer advice and support and encouragement for any issues that you may be experiencing.

Do join both the Fostering Kids Upper South page and your local area page as sometimes posts that are only relevant to those areas will be posted.

Website

Fostering Kids NZ website is looking very smart! Click here and see what’s happening. It is user friendly. There are a lot of resources, podcasts, conference, training calendar and events. It will give you updated information about what is happening in the care sector.

Training

I can never emphasise enough, the value of keeping up those unique skills needed for your caregiving role.

Term Two gives us:

TEAMWORK in Nelson over 2 evenings Wednesday 31st of May and 7th of June. Grab a babysitter and take the opportunity to network and learn together. Also a great opportunity for those that find it difficult to get time off work. The importance of identifying and knowing how to get an efficient team around you is invaluable.

ATTACHMENT AND RESILIENCE in Blenheim will be covered on the evening of Wednesday 5th of July. There may be an online component to this discussion. This is a core workshop and enables us to understand where the difficulties have begun with our kids in care.

Please register online by following this link:  https://fosteringkids.net/schedule/schedule.php.

I look forward to seeing you at a training soon.
