Kia ora koutou,
Wishing you all warm greetings as the frost and winter winds are biting outside! As this issue comes to you there will already be a number of you affected by viruses and winter illness. I hope you have managed to keep these at bay, but if like me you have been caught short by the unavailability of the flu jab or have children that have already succumbed then the reality of juggling work, sick kids and family are having an effect.
Following on from this, I thought this is a good opportunity to remind caregivers of the responsibility of what “Guardianship” means when it comes to everyday decisions concerning the children in our care. Vaccinations fall under the heading of “Guardianship” and we are responsible for seeking consent to get these for our children, even if we have permanency (except if you have limitations under the Special Guardianship Act – Health).
Look out for the workshops and discussion sessions this term in your area, please value the importance of upskilling and learning. Please know that these trainings play an important part in the success of your child’s/tamariki’s outcome while in care.
There is a lot of negative media around children in care at present and I know from experience how this impacts on me as a caregiver. Fostering Kids NZ acknowledge that unfortunately there will always be a need for caregivers, both general and whanau/kin and that you are valued and do an incredibly difficult and selfless thing, by offering yourself and your whanau/family up to be caregivers and a care family.
Thank you seems inadequate, however please know how deep the gratitude is.
Noho ora mai- Stay well, look after yourselves
