It is important that all Foster caregivers are familiar with the policies around caring for children. The Foster Care Handbook gives a brief overview of some of these policies. You can request a copy from your Social Worker or download it from the Oranga Tamariki website using this link – https://mvcot.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/Caregivers-A4-handbook.pdf
Andeana Pilalis, Critical Support Manager at Fostering Kids NZ, also recommends that you become familiar with the Practice Centre (https://practice.mvcot.govt.nz/).
Oranga Tamariki have also recently produced a new resource for all parents raising children, from birth to 18 years. They worked with caregivers and other partners to create a resource that would make it easier to find health and education services information and access services.
It can be used as a type of checklist, to ensure children and young people in care have access to all the universal services they’re entitled to. It also includes information to help access specialist support services.
The Hand in Hand Book has been distributed to the Ministry’s active caregivers and is also available online – https://mvcot.govt.nz/news/new-handbook-to-better-support-caregivers. If you have not received a copy please contact your social worker.
