It’s finally starting to sink in (as I start preparing this newsletter) that a long-planned event in my own life is getting very close. In the third week of August I head overseas for an extended period, returning late October. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to take some time out from the busyness of daily life.
If you need support for any reason or have a query during my absence, please call 0800 693 323 and ask for ‘Northwest’ caregiver support and you will be put through to someone you can talk to, either Stephanie, National Manager Training & Support or Iona, Lower North Regional Coordinator.
Support groups will continue as usual; Janine and Diane are the contacts for their groups. There are two other important dates this month regarding new support group activities. (Please see below).
I had the pleasure of meeting local fundraisers, Emma Eager and Neve Hudson who are year 7 pupils at Oakura Primary School. They decided after hearing about children in foster care from Emma’s Grandmother, they would hold a ‘Pyjama Day’ at school. Along with a donation from ‘Nana’, they raised $500.00 and presented me with a large box of pyjama’s (sized 3 – 14 years), and some children’s books they had purchased. It was great to meet two young people so interested in the needs of other children. Please text or email me if you’d like a book or PJ’s.

It is with sadness I’ve received Kylie McDonagh-Parker’s resignation from the Northwest Regional Committee. Kylie and I connected very early on in my role as Regional Co-ordinator and her enthusiasm and knowledge was appreciated and valued by me. Thank you for your contribution Kylie and I’m sure we all wish you well in your social work career. Your understanding of foster care will be a great asset to your practice.
Each region within Fostering Kids NZ is establishing a Regional Committee. This is a voluntary role with up to four members. My goal is that we have caregivers representing Whanganui, New Plymouth and Taumarunui wide areas as members. The Committee focuses on how to engage caregivers, event planning, etc. They meet as agreed by the members which is generally at least once a term, sometimes twice. You will need to have access to the internet as we’ll be having our virtual meetings. There may be some more involvement leading up to a large event. Please contact me if you’re interested in the role and I’ll send you an application form. As I’m away, there will be no meeting until the fourth term.
