Kia Ora All,

It is time to acknowledge and celebrate the great work caregivers do, by way of Foster Care Awareness Week starting the first week of March. I would like to extend a genuine congratulations to the caregivers who won an Excellence in Foster Care award from Otago and Invercargill this year. It is so deserving; I hope you have a fantastic few days in Wellington.

EXCELLENCE IN FOSTER CARE AWARDS 2017

You are all so deserving of an award and since we can’t fly you all up to Wellington I’m hoping there is a celebration or appreciation event near you. Please contact your Caregiver Social Worker or Association KC to find out what is on.

Invercargill has a Celebrating Carers Retreat the weekend of 3 & 4 March 2018, which presents a great opportunity for all those involved in care in Southland. There will be something for the whole family; supervised activities for the children, stimulating learning and adventure for the youth, and learning and networking opportunities for the adults. We have Rob Surtees, a psychotherapist travelling down from Wellington, to share his knowledge on the complexities of looking after children experiencing developmental trauma, and Katie O’Connor passing on knowledge and practice on mindfulness as a self-care resource. Sunday is an organised day of family fun for Children’s Day. Contact myself or your Caregiver Social Worker if this interests you. Caregivers from Southland do have first option of the sleeping spaces. If you haven’t registered, you need to do so as soon as possible by contacting Marina 021 1463 020

To make sure you are kept up-to-date, please make sure you join our ‘Lower South Fostercare Support Group’ Facebook page and our National page ‘Fostering Kids New Zealand’ facebook page as well as our website: www.fosteringkids.org.nz, for up-to-date news and events.

Training

We have a selection of workshops scheduled around the region that I really hope you are aware of; Legal Issues in Oamaru on 14 March, Safety and Prevention in Dunedin on 15 March as well as in Invercargill on 21 March. It is so important to keep up with the knowledge and skills needed for looking after children with the complexities of coming from a hard place. Please register online here. I’d love to see you at one of the trainings. Contact me if there is a particular workshop you would like brought to your area.

Take care, stay safe

Noho Ora Mai

Barbara
