Kia ora koutou

Is it me or is it getting warmer? Nope, it’s just me. However, there seems to be more sunlight so things must be heading in the right direction. I hope all of you are well and looking forward to the coming month when we have our conference!! I’m looking forward to meeting more of you and to the learning opportunities that conference provides.

I recognise that not all of our caregivers will be able to go so don’t forget that you can access training and use those sessions as an opportunity to reinforce your skills and meet other caregivers from your area. See below for more information.

Don’t forget your Facebook group for Lower North. You need to be a Fostering Kids NZ member to be allowed access, as this is a closed group page. This is to ensure that it’s a safe space for you to find useful information and seek support.  I keep adding things that I hope are helpful and it would be great to have more of our membership using and contributing to it too.

October Snippets

The last week of September is going to be a very busy one for us, as we will be at our National Conference learning lots and meeting many caregivers.  Unfortunately this means that we won’t be able to get our October Snippets out to you on 1 October.  Instead we will share some learning from conference with you in the second week of October.

Association Information

A combined area event has been booked at Junglerama in Moera (Lower Hutt) for some family fun time on 9th September 17;  from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Should be a good one!! This is for all caregiver families from Wairarapa, Porirua, Wellington and Hutt Valley. Information has been emailed to all members.  Please let us know if you did not receive this.

Keep your eyes open for other get togethers being held by local associations in Wairarapa, Porirua, Kapiti, Wellington, Manawatu and Tararua as well.

I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to do some training in the evening in Lower Hutt over the last couple of weeks. I will be taking this forward into my planning for the coming term so look out for more evening sessions later in the year! Thank you to those who attended. Always good to see more male caregivers at training!

As always the full training calendar is on our website: www.fosteringkids.net/schedule/schedule.php but below is a description of the next course I’m running.

Legal Issues

Don’t be put off by the name of the course! This is a very practical session with lots of clearly explained and important information.

The course looks at how the law affects you as caregivers. It discusses different types of guardianship and legal orders. We look at the Care of Children Act (2004) and the Child, Young Person and Their Families Act (1989), and the principles that drive them. Those who attend will hear about the court system, youth justice principles, Family Group Conferences and lots of other things that we’re sure will be helpful to you.

Get yourself along! It’s always good to meet and talk with caregivers and colleagues!

Legal Issues Training

Wednesday 20th  September 17 2017; 9:00am to 3:30pm, Rangitumau Room, REAP House, 340 Queen Street, Masterton.
