Kia ora everyone,

I was really hoping that this month I would be able to leave the “rain” speak behind! But with the wet and rainy spring weather comes the birth of new life,  new beginnings, new possibilities, fresh starts and hope.

As I drive around the Lower North area, meeting so many of you, I am watching the lambs appearing in the fields, growing bigger and bouncier. I am seeing the colourful flowers begin to appear in gardens and on the trees and shrubs. Don’t you just love to see colour popping up to push away the dark winter days? I know I do!

I have managed to get along to some of the support group meetings recently, where I have really enjoyed meeting you all. I am also really excited to be able to tell you that a new Levin support group is starting up. So if you live in Levin or the surrounding areas, please get in touch and find out more about how to get involved.

In the Lower North area, we have a number of established support group who meet regularly, including:

  • Tararua Foster Carers
  • Manawatu Foster Care Association Inc
  • Kapiti Foster Care Support Group
  • Wairarapa Foster Care Association
  • Porirua Unique Foster Carers
  • Wellington Family & Fostercare Association

If you would like to know more details about the above groups, please email me iona.w@nullfosteringkids.org.nz or call our free phone number 0800 693 323

If you or a couple of you would like to get a group connection happening somewhere, please go to our Fostering Kids NZ website. There you will find details that explain how to set up a support group, so please take a look here.

Regional Hui

Lower North Hui is coming to Lower Hutt on Wednesday 24 October 2018. Registrations are now open.

I know I am excited to attend. I’m especially eager to learn about the shared understandings of children affected by trauma, Foetal Alcohol and sensory challenges. All things our children in care can struggle with. There will also be information on whats coming up on the horizon of care in NZ too.

Don’t forget it is free for Fostering Kids NZ caregiver members, and if you live in the Kapiti, Manawatu or Tararua areas and would like to attend; organise a car/van load of attendees and Fostering Kids NZ can contribute a petrol voucher to go towards fuel costs. Please get in touch with me to discuss.

Visit the website to find out more and register today. To register click here.

It was great to meet all that attended my first trainings last month in both Levin and Masterton. Thank you all for your support to make it such a fun and interactive couple of days. I hope you all enjoyed learning more about Carer Families and Identity & Belonging and had a good time whilst doing so.

I am looking forward to being in Wellington on Tuesday 11 September for Identity & Belonging, and Palmerston North on Tuesday 25 September for Safety & Prevention. There is still time to register for these on the website, or contact Christine 0800 100 849 for assistance. I hope to see lots of you there.

Ngā manaakitanga (with best wishes)
