Fostering Kids NZ welcomes the targeted investment announced in Budget 2016 to support the work of caregivers with vulnerable children.
The Minister of Social Development Anne Tolley has announced $199.9 million over four years for the transformation programme and the new child-centred operating model. This includes caregiver recruitment and training, and better access to support for caregivers.
Fostering Kids CEO Linda Surtees says “there is a desperate shortage of caregivers, and this will go some way to addressing the problem. Caregivers tell us they also need more training. We’re pleased their calls are being heard.”
Fostering Kids NZ spokesman Alistair Wilkinson says, “one of the key reasons caregivers step away from the role is because they don’t feel they have the support to carry on. Caring for a child in need is, in our opinion, one of the most important jobs in our community. We’re pleased the Government is looking at ways to better support our vital role.”
