Wow, its November already, the year has flown by very fast.  It is great to have longer days and slightly warmer weather.

The feedback we had about our recent national conference at the end of September in Christchurch was very positive.  One of the learning goals was about building an understanding of seeing the child in our care beyond what they demonstrate and communicate to us at times, often negatively.  It was great to understand the current science around developmental trauma, (also known as complex), and how this effects the wiring of in a child/young person’s brain, thus lessening their capacity to trust.  The message that was reiterated to me was how as a foster parent, the most important and first thing to do is to regulate myself in challenging and stressful times.  Often it’s our default stance to become defensive in our parenting and in how we deal with those challenging situations.   I know I need to be mindful of this and practice self-regulation more and more as I’m the adult in this situation.

Just a reminder of the Family Fun Days coming up in November around the region.  Please contact your Key Contact (details below) or us here at national office to let us know number of tickets you require. The pool party in Napier is on 17 December.  The Gisborne pool party is on 16 December.

If you need support or some advice whilst Gonny is on leave, please contact Fostering Kids NZ (0800 693 323) and ask for me.
