2018 Excellence in Foster Care Award recipients.
Malcolm and Brenda have been caregivers for over 35 years with the couple repeatedly described as people who are prepared to go the extra mile.
Their care journey began in Christchurch, inspired by Brenda’s mother who was also a caregiver, before they moved to Auckland. They have had more than 100 children come through their home.
They are looked up to in the foster care community and are active members of the Auckland Foster Care Association with Malcolm serving as Chair for the New Zealand Family and Fostercare Federation for 3 years. Brenda’s training as a nurse has allowed them to take on many placements with children who have medical and/or high and complex needs. They support other carers with relief caring and keep up their training.
The Yorston’s work hard to maintain strong relationships with their foster children, social workers and other caregivers. They have an open door policy within their home to ensure everyone feels welcome, safe and loved.
