2018 Excellence in Foster Care Award recipients.
Kerry and Lyall Halder are a fantastic team and have been foster carers for 15 years, providing homes for more than 40 children, including some of Southland’s challenging teenagers.
The Halders became caregivers after initially being asked to provide respite care for a friend and then feeling that they could do more to help other children in need of a home.
This couple are strong advocates for the children in their care. They are always eager and willing to enhance their knowledge and skills to help meet the needs of the children in their care, regularly attending training sessions and connecting with other organisations and providers. They are positive people who remain focused on the children in their care and work hard to create a positive and honest image of fostering in the local Invercargill community. Kerry and Lyall regularly volunteer their support and experience to other carers and parents.
They remain respectful of the whānau of the children in their care and have been described by a parent recently as “I respect Kerry and think it is marvellous what she has done for my son.” They love it when the kids they have cared for keep in touch and catch up whenever they can.
