2017 Excellence in Foster Care Award recipients.
Sally Mowbray-Lee says after 26 years of fostering her and Brian were really ‘chuffed’ to be acknowledged.
Strong advocates for children in their care, Sally and Brian devote time to each child’s educational, sporting and other interests, as well as helping them stay in touch with those who support and mentor them.
Sally says “We have always loved kids and young people and child development has always interested us as well.”
Over the years Sally and Brian have made a huge contribution as members and serving on the committee of the Foster Care Association Auckland Incorporated (FCAA). And they’re always ready to support any caregiver, neighbour or child in care, or share what they’ve learned with others.
Sally advises new caregivers to think carefully about how they react to the things children and young people share.
“Try not to be a drama queen over things because the kids have already had drama,” she says.
Sally also believes it is crucial to consider how biological children will react before bringing a new child or young person into the house.
“If you’ve got children of your own, look to see if they’ve got the personality to cope with an extra child, a needy child, coming into the house.
