2017 Excellence in Foster Care Award recipients.
Dennis and Lauren Rei have been family home caregivers in New Plymouth since 2014.
Tireless advocates for the children and young people in their care – Dennis and Lauren always go the extra mile, sometimes quite literally, driving hundreds of kilometres to help the children and young people who are transitioning.
Dennis and Lauren agree – the most important skill they’ve developed is to work as a team.
“Discuss it later, but agree at the time,” Lauren says.
Dennis and Lauren also work actively in the community to get other people involved in the caregiving world – recruiting relievers for the family home from their circle of friends.
They’ve also watched some of the children in their care find long term homes with friends of theirs.
“There are a lot of ways to help, from respite care to permanent care.
It is a privilege. We’re blessed in what we do and it flows to the children,” Lauren says.
Staff at Child, Youth and Family tell us Dennis and Lauren show a level of resilience and empathy which is immeasurable, adding they love the smell of baking whenever they enter the family home!
