Studylink update

You may have read on our facebook page the update I posted about Studylink.

As you may be aware, we have been advocating for change to the way caregivers are means tested when our young people want to further their study and apply for Studylink.  I have met with Minister Tolley, she was very sympathetic and has requested this matter be resolved as soon as possible. I understand it may require some legislation changes but she is fully behind it. All looks very good for the future, but in the meantime if you are experiencing difficulties, please contact your regional coordinator or our National office.

In addition to the Studylink issue, I raised with the Minister that the Child Disability Allowance is not available to caregivers. I understand this allowance is for parents and UCB (Unsupported Child Benefit) recipients however, the criteria is different for caregivers to receive Higher Fostercare Allowance. The Minister agrees that the criteria should be aligned and has asked her team to work on this as well.

Fostering Kids New Zealand National Conference

As our organisation continues to grow, the Board and I continue to look at how best to support caregivers in the most effective way. After the September 2017 conference, we have decided that the annual conference will now be held once every two years. This provides opportunity for regional conference to occur in the alternative years. This will allow better access for a greater number of caregivers to attend and provide more of a local flavour.  More information will be available at conference.

National Caregiver Survey

You should have already received an email from us with a link to complete an online survey.

We strongly encourage you to participate in this survey as it allows your voice to be heard at a national level. If you haven’t received this email, please contact us at national office so that you can be included in this very important information gathering.
