Kia ora koutou

Trust you are all well, although I know there’s been lots of winter sicknesses that have affected many of your families.

There have been turbulent and exciting political times lately with lots of topical meetings being held such as: “Closing the Gap” held a few weeks ago at The Mount which raised, once again, the housing crisis in Tauranga.

The Te Puke Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) meeting with National MP, Todd McLay went well on 11 August. He got to hear first-hand how difficult it is for grandparents financially, socially, the worries some of them have for the parents of the children they are raising and how to find the support they need etc. Mr McLay listened carefully and said he would look into some specific cases personally to check whether more could be done to help. Thank you Ruth for organising this.

The Community Providers’ Forum held a get together on 17 August where we received some great tips from Rory Birkbeck of Safe Surfer – Internet for children & young people without harmful pornography. A local young man, he can set up home wifi and mobile phone protection apps at a very reasonable cost.  Have a look on www.safesurfer.co.nz. Also presenting was Whare For Whanau (Jena Young). This is a wraparound service for homeless people & families – not only those with “issues” but people who just cannot find a house to rent in Tauranga! And, Ngati Ranginui Runanga Chief Advisor, Kirsty McLaughlin.  Ngati Ranginui Runanga have moved recently to opposite the Historic Village and offer whanau support, men’s non violence support and transitional support for children in care to return to their whanau.

There have also been “Meet the Candidates” gatherings recently as well.

Papa Kainga Foster Care Support – In home monthly visits by ECE trained educators for under school age children.  Contact Kathryn Hawkes papakainga@nullikindergartens.nz 0800 250 052 ext 3 to learn more about this wonderful service which is available in the Tauranga, Rotorua and Taupo regions.

October Snippets

The last week of September is going to be a very busy one for us, as we will be at our National Conference learning lots and meeting many caregivers.  Unfortunately this means that we won’t be able to get our October Snippets out to you on 1 October.  Instead we will share some learning from conference with you in the second week of October.

Afternoon Tea Event for Caregivers

Topic: The Healing Brain – How can we help heal a child who hasn’t had the best start in Life, (the first 1000 days).  A 40 minute video that is sure to stimulate discussion as it is so relevant to caregivers, the video is punchy and entertaining. This is great stuff as it helps us to understand there has to be a different way of caring.

When:  Tuesday 5 September 17; 3–5pm (children welcome, Belinda generously offered to mind them in an adjoining room).

Where: Oranga Tamariki (formerly CYF) Office, Taupo

Training

By the time you receive this we will have had the Child Development Workshop on Thursday 24 August 17, which was preceded by a group get together to view The Healing Brain with some discussion.  Both compliment each other to promote a better understanding of how the brain functions and how to help heal a child who hasn’t had the best start in life.

We are currently working on the Term 4 schedule and this will go live mid-September. We will email it out when it goes live.
