Kia Ora koutou/Greetings everyone!
Here we are in Term 2! I hope the school holidays brought some relief from your busy routines and the chance to enjoy some family/whanau time.
Mother’s Day is on the Sunday 12 of May – what a good excuse for the opportunity of some self-care. Perhaps a ‘self-appreciation’ day alongside the thoughts and appreciation from those around you. Valuing yourself is a gift too. I think this little picture captures what parenting children in our care develops in you.
Last month, 15 lucky caregivers in Rotorua attended the Foundations for Attacment training and are part of the LIFT programme for the next six months. I helped facilitate the training with Sally Moffatt, Programme Manager for Caring Families Aotearoa (a division of Fostering Kids NZ). In the training, we learnt about the DDP (Dyadic Developmental Practice) model of working with children affected by trauma. Some other areas of New Zealand/Aotearoa have been able to receive this and we hope to offer more of this training to support you in the valuable, often demanding yet rewarding care commitment you have made.
Rotorua Caregivers: Thank you to Heather Jeffcote for hosting the meeting on April 30 at her home in the evening. I was really happy to be able to attend this as we discussed the topic “Living or Working with a Child Affected by Trauma”. Let’s face it, that includes most children in care, so very relevant. Heather has been bringing other topics to previous meetings, the most recent one was about Fetal Alcohol. Great and relevant. Please contact Heather by email: email@example.com or by ph 027 256 4550 if you’d like to be on the mailing list.
