Central North News – December 2019

Kia ora everyone!

By now, hopefully you will have read or heard that Gonny has moved onto another role closer to home and with less hours to enjoy her whanau as years are getting more precious to her. Gonny would like to pass onto you all that she will miss Fostering Kids NZ very much. I know that Gonny has enjoyed supporting you, advocating for you, sharing her knowledge with you and meeting so many of you through workshops and support groups.

We are currently going through the recruitment process for the Central North region and I will keep you updated.

Here we are at our December / Christmas edition already! Wow what a busy second half to the year with our National Conference in October and then straight into our Family Fun Days and now Christmas parties.

As we all gear up for the normal end of year dash, I would once again like to mention that this time of year is difficult for many of our tamariki as it is often a trigger for the whanau they miss or might not see over the holiday season. It might also be a reminder of the time of year that previous placements have not gone to plan or when in fact they entered care. Please expect some difficult behaviour, some lack of gratitude. Remember the A & E (Acceptance & Empathy) of our PACE parenting approach. If they are calm you may be able to be Curious – working with the child to understand their feelings and emotions. Try to plan some extra care for yourselves, stock up on coffee, chocolates and sleep!

Finally, have a blessed and very merry Christmas and wonderful New Year. I wish you well-being and a calm and relaxing holiday season.

Our National Office is closed on the 24 December and reopens on the 6 January. For more information on what to do if you are in need of support during this time, click here.
