Canterbury News – July 2019

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa te Matariki nei-Te Tau Hou Māori/ Warm Greetings to You All this Matariki-The Māori New Year,

I was lucky enough to attend the Otautahi and Christchurch wide caregiver event recently. Great to hear Rachael Hohaia, Oranga Tamariki South Operations Manager for the new Care Teams, speak about the New National Care Standards and the dedicated Care Teams. It was also lovely to spend time with lots of caregivers and enjoy the great hospitality. Many thanks to Angela for organising this wonderful day and extending an invitation to Fostering Kids NZ to make this an extra special occasion by honouring Gwenda and Graeme Swinney as Life members of Fostering Kids NZ. We acknowledge all the years they have given in supporting our organisation and caregivers with the many roles they have held.

We’d also like to help put on more caregiver events and gatherings across the region. Thanks to the Regional Committee members we have plans in place for Term 3. Look out for more information on the Facebook page and our emails soon. If you have some ideas for gatherings, please let me know.

Are you connecting with other caregivers? I just want to highlight that many caregivers tell us they can often feel isolated as friends, whānau and other parents don’t understand the challenges to this selfless role. This is why getting together with other caregivers or support groups can be so valuable, so please get involved.

The Term 3 training schedule is now open for registrations. To register please go to our website. Should you not be able to attend for any reason after registering, could you please send in your apology ASAP to Christine (0800 100 849) so that we can anticipate numbers and cater accordingly.

Kia kaha, Kia manawanui, Kia tūpato/Be strong, be courageous, be safe!
